In the region of the Pla de l'Estany
the town of Banyoles is worth visiting, where a Pre-Neandertal
jawbone was found thus giving witness to man's presence
in the area over 80,000 years ago. The city centre
is in the Main Square which, with its 40 arches, lend
it a sense of harmony (XIIIth c.). The gothic church
of Santa Maria dels Turers ( XIII-XIV c.). The ancient
monastery of Sant Esteve of Banyoles, with the gothic
altarpiece of the Mare de Déu de l'Escala, the work
of master Joan Antigó . The Pia Almoina, the regional
Museum of Archeology and the Darder Museum of natural
history. The town of Banyoles hosted the rowing events
for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, which took place
in the lake of tetonic and carsic origin. The lake
is 2,100 metres long and has a perimeter of 8 Km.
Porqueres, opposite Banyoles,
on the other side of the lake, is the church of Saint
Mary ( XIIth c.), the Castell Farmhouse with Iberian
and Roman traces. In the village of Pujarnol there
is the church of Sant Cebrià, the Pujarnol tower and
the dolmen with the same name.
