Girona is the capital of the
Girona region, noted for its historical and commerical
sector. The Jewish quarter with Isaac the Blind, a
complex of buildings that still maintains the essence
of the ancient Jewry. In the first half of the XIIIth
century the first Cabalist School of the peninsula
was set up. The XI-XVIII century cathedral, whose
interior houses numerous works of art, one of which
being the widest nave in gothic architecture in the
world. Its cloister is one of the most important in
Catalonia. The Chapterhouse Museum preserves the Beatus
of 975, the most characteristic and richest of codes
reproducing and illustrating the Commentary on the
Apocalypse, written by the blessed of Liebana. Also
to be found here is the Tapestry of the Creation,
an embroidery of the XI or XII century, unique of
its kind and the most important piece of romanesque
textile art preserved in the world. In the Girona
Art Museum is to be found a curious piece of the XIV
century, the only known Glazier's Table until now
in the world. The Episcopal Palace houses the Art
Museum. The former Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu
XIII-XVI c. with its Reclining Christ (1350) by Master
Aloi, a masterpiece of Catalan gothic structure. The
XIIth century Arabian Baths. Romanesque building inspired
by public Roman baths. Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants,
XI-XII c. Benedictine Monastery that preserves a unique
collection of Hebrew tombstonesOther interesting buildings
are: La Pia Almoina, the house of the Eagles, the
Convent of Sant Domènec, the Fontana d'Or, the Palace
of the Agullana family, the house of the Punxa and
the Teixidor flour mill. Rambla de la Llibertat, city
shopping centre since medieval times.
