| BESALÚ
One of Catalonia's prettiest and most
visited inland towns. Bisuldunum was a fortress between
two rivers: the Fluvià and the Capellades. It became
important as an independent County Capital after the
death of Guifré el Pilòs ( 902) ; upon the death without
descendents of Bernat II it became part of the House
of Barcelona. It has a population of 2,000 inhabitants,
but given its great historical importance, it continues
to be called County Town. In 1966 it was declared
a "National Hitorical and Artistic Monument" due to
its great architectural value. The whole town is an
example of romanesque art where the following monuments
are worth noting:
PONT
FORTIFICAT: XIth Romanesque bridge, angular in
construction, 105 metres long and seven arches.
JEWISH BATHS - MIQWÉ:
Purification baths, unique of its kind in Spain and
third to be discovered in Europe. Located in the jewish
quarter.
MONESTIR
DE SANT PERE: XIth C. with ambulatory (XIIth
C.) and Roman capitals. Interesting sculputural monument
with lions on the façade. Abbatial epoch tombs from
the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries and a barroque
belfry. The reconstruction of the ambulatory belongs
to 1160.
ESGLÉSIA DE SANT VICENÇ:
Founded in 977. It is made up of diverse styles, although
the overall structure is romanesque. Gothic side chapel
dedicated to Vera Creu and XVth century gothic tomb.
Gothic Saint Raphael side door.
CASA
CORNELLÀ: End of XIIth C. romanesque-civil
building.
PLAÇA
DE LA LLIBERTAT: XVIth C. vaulted square.
CÚRIA
REIAL: XIVth C. Palace of Justice and Royal Court.
HOSPITAL
DE SANT JULIÀ: XIIth C. exterior façade.
This list is just a guideline, because
the rest is a unique example of living history: the
collegiate church of St. Mary. The wall of Charles
III. The churches of St. Martin and St. James. The
Mint. The market in Tallaferro street and a whole
array of mansions, streets and small squares that
are reliable proof of the foremost importance of the
County of Besalu, round about the first millennium
of our Catalonia. Lately archeological work has been
done on the threshing-floor of the Xiua and the Devesa,
which have revealed remains
that clearly demonstrate the
historical importance of Besalu.
